Student Eligibility

There are two primary categories of BISD students  who are eligible for transportation services:

Standard Education - Two Mile Students

Special Education Programs

Standard Education Students - Two Mile Students

Students who are attending their zoned schools of attendance and who reside two or more miles (as measured along the shortest route that may be traveled on public roads) from their assigned campuses are eligible for transportation services at district designated stops.  Additionally, selected neighborhoods with elementary students less than the 2 mile funding limit have been designated as hazardous areas by BISD Board policy.  Students within these areas will also be provided bus service.

Bus Stop Location:

Bus stops will be located on primary residential streets only. Each of our bus stops are designed after careful study of demographics, walking distances to stops and ridership in your area. The overall safety of stop placement is the most important factor considered.

Elementary students may be required to walk up to .2 of a mile (two long blocks) to a bus stop. Secondary students may be required to walk up to .4 of a mile (four long blocks).

All Students who ride a school bus to school must be at their bus stop at least 5-7 minutes before the scheduled stop time. When the bus arrives at the stop, it is NOT REQUIRED to wait for students who are not standing at the stop. This especially includes students that wait inside a house or in a vehicle until the bus arrives. Birdville ISD drivers are not allowed to stop a bus for any student...other than at a scheduled stop. All school buses are on a set schedule. Waiting unnecessarily at any stop causes the bus to run late for other students.

Daily Service Criteria

Regular transportation is scheduled to provide service to student riders.  Bus stops that do not have riders for 3 days may be suspended temporarily for lack of ridership to conserve district resources.   Infrequent riders should contact the Transportation Department stating their wish to ride  when service is needed if their bus stop has historically low ridership to verify stop time and location

Special Education Programs

Students eligible for transportation to special education programs are resident district students with disabilities, impairments, or both who are eligible for special education services and who would be unable to attend school and benefit from their special education programs of instruction without the availability of specialized transportation.

A written Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committee recommendation requesting specialized transportation services and stating the specific type of transportation services necessary to reasonably accommodate the student's disability or impairment; and

An Individualized Education Program or Individualized Family Service Plan that includes the written recommendation of the ARD committee requesting specialized transportation services.
