Field Trip to the Library--Site for young students allows them to take a virtual field trip to the library, where they can learn about the things that will be available to them, different types of publications, and more. Colorful, Flash driven site. Funbrain Game Finder--Site allows users to see Funbrain games broken down into subjects and grade levels--very useful! Grants and Funding--U.S. government list of grants available to teachers and schools. How To Study--Site features tips on note-taking, test anxiety, listening skills, reading effectively, and much more. New York Times Daily Lesson Plans-- Hundreds of free lesson plans relating to New York Times articles. Currently focuses only on secondary classes. PBS TeacherSource--Site features lesson plans and activities in most subject areas, online professional development, more. Pics4Learning--Good source of copyright-free photos; users may also submit own photos. Puzzlemaker--Generates crosswords, word searches, mazes, math puzzles, more; may be printed or inserted into documents. TAKS: Released Exams--Collection of TAKS prior TAKS exams available for public use. Teachers Network--Large collection of online lesson plans in subjects from math and English to art and business. Test Prep--Free online test preparation activities for the SAT, ACT, and GRE examinations. (Requires registration) UnitedStreaming--Vast collection of streaming/downloadable educational videos, covering virtually all school subjects; also includes an image gallery, lesson plan ideas, more. WebQuest--Literally hundreds of guided learning activities, where students use websites to research topics from fine arts to math and everything in between. Rubrician--Collection of several types of free rubric generators. Rubistar--Another free rubric generator. Teach-nology Rubrics--Still more free rubric generators, organized by subject. Alta Vista--Search engine which features a very clean, easy-to-use format; also includes Babel Fish, a website language converter. Ditto--Image search engine. Dogpile--Metasearch engine; displays combined results from Google, Yahoo, MSN, and more. Google--Search engine site that features many more tools, including mapping program, image search, email, etc. Kartoo--Another metasearch engine; uses Flash animation, rather than simply text to visually display results. Requires Flash Player. Mamma--Another metasearch engine. MetaCrawler--One of the original metasearch engines. WebBrain--Interesting site, displays search results in text format and as an interactive "web", or mind-map. Requires Java. Yahoo--Hierarchical search tool; displays results in categories and subcategories. Edublogs--Free teacher blogs. ePals--Free student monitored email accounts and blogs. Site also features global collaboration opportunities. Gaggle--Free student filtered email accounts, chat rooms, and teacher/student blogs. International Society for Technology in Education--Site includes news stories, professional development opportunities, educator resources, and more. Learnerblogs--Free student web logs (blogs). NovemberLearning--Excellent source of information on current/future trends in educational technology; Resources portion of the site has nice catelog of sites covering integration, tech literacy, global learning, and more. Podcasting in Education--Apple's site, includes video tutorials for getting started, incorporating podcasts into the curriculum, and more. Requires registration (free). Techlearning--Suggestions for implementing/purchasing technology for teachers and administrators. Webwise--Site features tutorials for using the Internet, including browsers, email, social networks, and more. Also, students may play fun Weakest Link game to review each concept. Whyville--Social network for kids; monitored site enforces strict rules while allowing students to interact through projects, chat, games, and more. Wikispaces for Educators--Free classroom wikis for students and teachers. Very easy setup--great for collaborative projects. African American Women Writers of the 19th Century--Site containing more than 50 electronic texts from several key African American women of the 19th century. Includes biographical information. Book Central--Cool site by Scholastic featuring children's book reviews, games, discussion boards, activities, and more. Useful to supplement class instruction or motivate readers. Can I Have a Word--Combines writing, science, and social studies; students can read poetry of famous poets, then use visual and written prompts to create their own pieces. Citation Machine--Online tool uses visitor input to generate bibliographical citations in either MLA or APA formats. Comprehensive Online Research Education--Tutorial site from Purdue University undergraduate librarians walks visitors throught he process of creating an effective research paper, from initial planning to final draft. Dictionary.com--Online dictionary. Gracious Criticism-- Helpful tips on questions to ask and elements to examine when doing peer reviews. Grammar and Writing Guide --Includes guides to parts of speech, research, all types of written essays/letters, etc. Internet and Language Arts --Secondary language arts activities and lessons. Magnetic Poetry--Fun, Flash-driven site that simulates the magnetic writing kits that are on refrigerators everywhere. Poems can be saved and shared via email, as well. Mythweb--Online resource contains information on modern and ancient mythology, using animated stories. Poetry.com--Online collection of poetry in many styles; visitors may contribute their own poems to the site's monthly. The Printing Press--Free online tools for creating newsletters, brochures, booklets, or flyers. (Slow loading on dial-up connections) Starfall--Excellent, interactive site contains activities and lessons for building basic pre-reading and early reading skills. Also includes activity sheets and additional practice activities. Thesaurus.com--Online thesaurus. Turning the Pages--Amazing, interactive collection of historical pieces of literature from the British Museum. Visitors can virtually leaf through ancient manuscripts, unroll the earliest known book, a Chinese scroll printed in 868, view DaVinci's drawings, and more. Requires Shockwave. African Americans at War: Fighting Two Battles--Thought-provoking site details the duality that existed between the lives of African American soldiers on the battlefield versus at home. eLections--Very interesting interactive simulation of elective process, walking students through party selection, creation of a platform, campaigning, and more, leading right up to the presidential election. Embassy.org--This site contains links to foreign embassies of the United States. You will find a clickable country list that will provide ways to contact the embassy. Some even provide links to information about the county. Exploration Through the Ages--Very informative site from the Maritime Museum. Chronicles ocean-bound explorers from the ancients to the 20th century, including biographies, descriptions of vessels, and journey details. Four Directions Teachings-- Excellent site features and explores the history and traditions of the Blackfoot, Cree, Ojibwe, Mohawk and Mi'kmaq tribes of Canada. Includes a large amount of quality audio and video. (Requires Flash) Hispanic American History--timeline of important events in the history of hispanic Americans, from Columbus to the present. Images of the Civil War--Amazing site featuring photos from the Civil War era; best feature is that students can create their own multimedia presentation by selecting an audio track, narration, and photos. Requires Flash Player. Junior Achievement--(Click on Student Center - it's the free part) Entepreneur Center (all about starting a business). The Learning Page--Resource from the Library of Congress includes tutorials, discussion guides, media resources, and more; focuses on the American Memory Collection. Lesson Plans and Resources--Site contains links to lesson plan ideas for all grade levels and links to other Social Studies sites. WiseGuide Web Magazine--Introduces new users to educational resources available at the Library of Congress. Antarctic Conservation Blog--Interesting blog detailing the day-to-day observations of researchers attempting to preserve artifacts of the Ernest Shackleton expedition in 1908. Astronomy.com--Features current astronomical events/news, large picture gallery Bizarre Stuff You Can Make in Your Kitchen-- Collection of experiments done with everyday materials. Black Holes: Gravity's Relentless Pull--Flash-driven site that explains the forces that create black holes, identifies tools for studying black holes, distinguishes between different wavelengths of light, and more. Chem4Kids--Good introductory site for students to learn about atoms, elements, reactions, and the periodic table. ChemicalElements--Easy-to-use site with clickable periodic table that provides information about all elements. Discover Primary Science-- Primary science activities and resources. DNA--Informative site from PBS that offers a historical look at the discovery of DNA and its significance, an overview of current research, and future implications of genetic research. Earth Observing System --Excellent source of up to the minute images of the earth from satellites/space station. Earth Science Explorer--Information/links on earth science topics, including geologic history, plate tectonics, and paleontology. Follow the Flow of Food--Site gives step-by-step illustrations and information on the digestive process. Froguts.com--Interactive step-by-step dissection of a frog (requires free Flash plugin). The Green Guide--articles, videos, and quizzes from National Geographic on ways to make a home more environmentally friendly. How Earthquakes Happen--Nice site from BBC explains how natural disasters occur, including earthquakes, tornadoes, tsunamis, and more using Flash animation. Howstuffworks--Very informative site explains the inner workings of electronics, automobiles, travel, science, the human body, and much more. Human Anatomy Online--Contains more than 100 illustrations of the human body; includes descriptions and links. The Legend of Nessie-- Site with large amount of information about the Loch Ness Monster, Nessie, her sightings, efforts to find her, and the scientists looking for her. Mapping Memory--Interactive site from National Geographic allows users to examine the brain in a 3-d simulation of the process of memory. NASAKids--Iincludes interviews with astronauts, lessons on astronomy and space travel, games, activities, and a teachers section. Organ Donation--Site gives good overview of the topic, including tips and materials for becoming a donor. Playing with Time--Site contains numerous small video clips showing everyday events in high or low-speed. Students might use the clips as a model for creating their own videos of scientific processes, which can be submitted to the site for publication. Solar System Exploration--Great-looking, interactive guide to the solar system created by NASA; includes multimedia clips, information on technology, current/past missions, educational resources, and more. Requires Flash Player. Sun-Earth Viewer--Fantastic site from NASA that allows visitors to view up-t0-date images of the sun from a variety of types of telescopes, such as magnetic, infrared, ultraviolet, etc. Users can zoom in for a closer look and see the relative size of the earth. Tour of a Cell--Interactive animated tour of an animal cell by the National Science Foundation; very cool site! Virtual Wonders--Interactive, 360-degree views of amazing natural objects and oddities. Includes items such as recently discovered trilobites, the Martian surface, a deformed sheep skull, and more. Requires Flash plugin. Waves that Shook the World--Created by PBS, this site focuses on the December, 2004 tsunamis that struck Indonesia. Includes interactive demonstrations of the causes of tsunamis, measures being taken to prepare for future tsunamis, and more. Weather Maker--Allows students to create different types of weather by adjusting polar and equatorial temperatures and relative humidity. What's That Stuff?--Site explains the chemistry behind interesting everyday objects, such as Silly Putty, glowsticks, lipstick, and Cheese Whiz. Wild Ireland--Site from PBS Nature series features interactive map of Ireland. Clicking on sites brings up slideshows and information about the wildlife of regions of Ireland Wildrepublic--Site focusing on wildlife, especially birds. Features lesson plans for primary and secondary. Also, opportunity to obtain two free "singing" wild bird toys for classroom use. Wings of the Albatross--Site by National Geographic examines the amazing and unique albatross. Features maps, videos, image galleries, models explaining the birds' amazing flying ability, and more. Arithmetic Quiz-- Simple, times quizzes in basic math skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Cool Math--Flashy site with lots of useful resources, including games, tutorials, math art, virtual calculators, and more. Enrich Enriching Mathematics-- Site featuring colorful and challenging mathematics puzzles, games, and articles by the University of Cambridge. Figure This!--Family-oriented site featuring math challenges using everyday objects and experiences. Fractal Geometry--Site features explanations of fractal geometry and the ability to create a Pythagorean Tree online. Fun Mathematics--Easy to use math games/activities for subjects from counting to calculus. Includes some Spanish language games. Funbrain--Popular site with fun math games for students in grades kindergarten through 8. Also includes some reading/language arts games. Graphing Calculator Tips--Ideas for incorporating graphing calculators into math and science classrooms. Hotmath Algebra Practice--Practice activities for Algebra divided into different topics. Includes tutorial guides to solving problems, allowing student review of troublesome concepts. Interactives: 3D Shapes-- Site intended for secondary students examines 3 dimensional shapes from cubes to truncated icosahedrons. Math Dictionary for Kids-- Very well-done site, uses clickable terms and colorful illustrations to define common math term, concepts, and figures. Math World--Excellent interactive tutorials and explanations for higher level math topics, including geometry, algebra, calculus, discrete mathematics, and more. Piggy Bank--Fun and simple yet challenging game where students must race the clock as they count money. Rainforest Maths--Interactive math activities from pre-k through 6th grade. Easy-to-use and attractive site. School Years Around the World--Math activity centering around graph reading, multiplication. (Requires Adobe Reader) S.O.S. Mathematics--Math tutorials and test preparation for higher level math, including algebra, trig, calculus, and beyond. SuperKids Math Worksheet Creator--Generates math worksheets for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, rounding, fractions, and greater/less than. 20 Years of Animation at Pixar--Site uses Flash animation and audio narration to explain the processes involved in creating Pixar's rich animation, including the effort that goes into character development. A.Pintura: Art Detective--Creatively teaches art concepts and famous artists by following a detective searching for a missing painting. Cezanne's Astonishing Apples--Site about the artist Paul Cezanne examines one of the artist's still life paintings, includes online activities, art and writing activities, and an audio story inspired by the artist's work. Ear Training--Site allows band/choir students to practice discerning changes in pitch; very simple to use.
