Protecting Children in the
Digital Age

The Internet is an amazing tool for learning, communication, and entertainment. It has the ability to expose students to people, places, and ideas that were never before possible. Imagine being able to view up-to-the-second images from powerful telescopes, hearing audio from speeches by great leaders such as Martin Luther King, Jr. or Winston Churchill, watching videos created by students in a classroom in China, and more! Students today truly have access to knowledge and ideas that vastly exceed what was available to us, their parents.

However, the dark side of the Internet is ignored at our peril. The Internet is filled with potential hazards, hazards which can cause damage to computers, stolen identities, and, in the worst possible cases, physical harm to our children. As a result, it is mandatory that parents, teachers, and students become not only more technologically skilled, but more technologically savvy.

Parents and teachers are encouraged to visit any/all attached links and resources in order to best educate yourselves about the dangers and the means available to ensure our children's safety online.

Internet Safety Rules For Kids!

  • Do not give out personal information such as address, telephone number, parents' work address or work telephone number, or the name and location of your school without your parents' permission.
  • If you ever encounter something online that you don't understand or that makes you uncomfortable, tell a parent or teacher right away.
  • Never get together with someone you met online without getting your parents' permission first. If a meeting is decided, be sure that it is in a public place and that you bring one or both parents along.
  • Do not send any picture of yourself to anyone without getting your parents' permission first.
  • Do not respond to any messages that make you feel uncomfortable. It is not your fault if you get a message like that, and it is okay to tell your parents no matter what it is.
  • Follow the rules that your parents set for computer and Internet use. Always make sure it is okay to go online before you do so.
