What is workers’ compensation?

Workers’ Compensation is a state-regulated insurance program that pays your medical bills and provides payments to replace some of your lost wages if you are injured at work or if you have a work-related disease or illness.

Steps to Follow for Workers' Compensation Injuries

  1. Report the injury to your supervisor as soon as possible.

  2. Notify Birdville ISD Workers’ Compensation office immediately. The Birdville Workers’ Compensation representative will assist the employee in obtaining necessary medical treatment from a qualified doctor or medical clinic. Hours for the Workers’ Compensation office are:

    Monday - Thursday
    8:00 a.m. - 4:15 p.m.

    Friday
    8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

If an injury occurs after regular business hours employees may go to a hospital emergency room or a medical clinic for immediate medical treatment.  Employee should report the injury to the Workers’ Comp office the following workday.

  3. Employee must complete the yellow Employee’s Report Of On-The-Job Injury form and return it to the Workers’ Compensation office within 24 hours of the injury.

  4. The Principal, Director, or Supervisor must complete the blue Supervisor Accident Report form and return the form to the Workers Compensation Office within 48 hours of employee’s injury.

Key Points to Workers' Compensation

  1. Notify the Payroll office if you desire to use accrued sick or vacation leave for the first seven days of your absence.

  2. If your doctor takes you off work more than twenty-eight days, Workers’ Compensation will retroactive your temporary income benefits to include the first seven days of absence and that amount will be deducted from your first full check earned at Birdville ISD after returning to work.

Workers’ Compensation temporary income benefits are based on 80% of your average weekly wage. If you have available accrued leave, you can use 25-30% of your accrued leave as additional wage benefits.
